The two-year-long drought that has gripped Madison is causing serious problems for our community. For several months we have lived with severe limitations on our water consumption. We can water lawns or wash cars only from midnight to 4:00 a.m. Recently, restrictions have become even more severe. Since our water use is regulated, we must monitor how much water we use to wash laundry or dishes and to bathe. Water quality has also become a problem. The water smells like unwashed socks, and most people do not feel safe drinking it. However, the worst problem we are facing is the threat of serious fires. I’m being let out of my lease (no written notice req, cleaning fees waived) and offered a transfer to a vacant apartment. However, I am not able to park at/near proffered apartment so this is very inconvenient. They stated that they would prefer if we moved out so they could fix the mold/water leaks. Over the last 2 years, I notified the maintenance team in writing about leaks from the roof when it rained. Three times they painted the wall to cover the water stain and ignored the roof. Now I have mold growing through the sheetrock and feel forced to leave because we have asthma and/or allergies. They refused (“it’s not our policy”) to place mold monitors in our apt to detect spore growth and air quality during the construction/remediation. Should they pay for us to move, plus the cost of transfering my utilities –all approx $1,200…what are my rights as a tenant?
