Over the summer, I have been busy, and have not changed my water. The water quality has plummeted, and I want to fix this. I have a 20 gal. tank with 1 gold wonder killie and a 10 gal. tank with some tetras. I know I can’t change the water quality to fast or it will be really bad. How do I go about saving my fish.
I have 6x 6″ Silver Dollars and only last night one of them started to move around very strangely. It is doing summer-salts in the aquarium. It cannot stay upright. It starts by struggling up to the surface, flapping about as if not being able to control itself then turns 360 degrees and starts all over again. I have monitored it today and now it is struggling around flapping slowly . I thought it may have eaten something and is slowly choking because my water quality is perfect, I brought a sample down to the local pet shop and got the water tested for everything , nitrates , ammonia etc. I took the fish out and opened its mouth up with a tweezers and I can see straight down its throat , nothing there except for loads of teeth. What can I do? I have never seen anything like this before. The other 5 Dollars , cory catfish , cardinals and other tetras are fine. One other thought , I have these Silver Dollars over 6 years , so maybe its old age. All help and all possibilities needed, Thanks.
I ended his poor life sorry to say.
Have just introduced my first fish t my freshwater community tank, 10 glowlight tetras. water quality is being monitored and is fine, and the fish have been in about 24 hrs. At first they grouped together ie for the first 18 hr or so, which is what i would expect from a ‘schooling fish’. Now they have grouped into a 2 or three groups ad have started chsing each other, difficult to tell but i think its the same fish being chased all the time…
my question is this, is this mating type behavior ( these fish are fairly young as they are recent purchases) or have i bought too many for one ‘school’, or would you say they are in distress?
