You aren't going to encounter anything in San Diego tap water that will cause you immediate harm, such as harmful bacteria, protozoa or chemicals. But San Diego has had only a "fair" rating by the NRDC and environmental organizations have suggested pregnant/nursing women and young children not drink tap water. In 2002 ethylene dibromide, lead and some radioactive elements were found in higher than average amounts. Importantly, none of these contaminants were over any safety standards or thresholds. Realistically, you could drink a gallon of San Diego tap water every day for fifty years and never suffer any ill effects from it. The amount of carcinogens, pathogens and other contaminants in their tap water is negligible compared the air pollution in San Diego or what you would be exposed to by swimming in the ocean or a swimming pool. If you are truly concerned or paranoid, buy bottled water. Alternatively, it would be most cost effective to purchase a quality filtration system for your home that would remove the lead, chlorine and other particulate matter. However, even if you drank bottled water, you still cook, shower, brush your teeth, etc. with tap water, so what difference will it make?
